Insomniac’s Spider-Man Looks Promising, But Will It Deliver?

Spider-Man is my favorite superhero of all time, so when a trailer for his new game dropped in E3 last year, I was naturally excited. The trailer looked excellent and when at the end it showed that it was being developed by Insomniac that excitement turned to anticipation. After one year, we got a new game-play trailer at this years E3. Now I am absolutely buzzing for this game, but there are a few questions that I have after watching the trailer.

Who will be the main villain in the story?

Spider-Man has a wealthy rogues gallery, but only a few can really be considered a worthy main villain for a video game. In the trailer we were shown two villains, Mr Negative & Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin. Now don’t get me wrong both villains are worthy adversaries to Spidey, however I do not see them as end game villains for a main plot. In past Spidey games, you always face numerous villains till you face the main one at the very end of the games. I can think of a number of villains that could be that showpiece for this game.

  • Green Goblin
  • Carnage
  • Doctor Octopus
  • Kraven The Hunter
  • Electro

These were just to name a few, so here is hoping we will see a bigger villain reveal nearer to the release date!

How engaging will the open world be?

Now we have seen in past Spider-Man games where it has been a blast to swing around the city and dive off of skyscrapers. But lets be honest, they were never that dense or really made you feel like you were living in a real world.

There were the standard incidents that you would stumble across, like capturing robbers in a getaway or saving civilians from fires and other catastrophes. But they would quickly become mundane tasks and a chore to deal with.

What I want is side quests and interesting characters that you can meet while exploring. You just need to look at both Batman Arkham City & Arkham Knight as good examples, or Insomniac’s own Sunset Overdrive, where this has been done well.

Just like his Rogues gallery, Spidey also has plenty of friends and companions that can be a part of this game and add to this world. A few examples would be:

  • Black Cat
  • Dr Curt Conners
  • J Jonah Jameson
  • Madamme Web
  • Silver Sable

Again there are plenty more, but yes lets have some of these characters appear with some new side quests that can add not only depth to the world but also to the plot. This with the random incidents that can appear will really make New York feel like a Spider-Man city.

Will Miles Morales Play A Role In This Game?

Right at the very end, we see Miles taking photos of Spider-Man on top of the helicopter. Now for those who may not know, he eventually becomes Spider-Man himself taking place in the Ultimate Universe. Now considering he did not take part in any of the sequences that happened at the time, that tells me he may not be Spider-Man just yet. If that is the case, could this be that the events we watched in the trailer are early on in this game, and later he will become Spider-Man? Or does he not become Spider-Man at all?

I really really want to know, because we have never had a game where there are two Spider-Mans. So this could be a first, and that just gets me thinking about all the cool missions there could be where maybe you switch between the two for branching paths and then all the combat sequences where they combine attacks to take down enemies. This is where I start to get hyped all over again, and I really really can’t wait to find out!

The waiting game begins

There are my three burning questions for the new Spider-Man game. To be honest, I have faith in Insomniac to deliver a quality game that fans will enjoy. It really is more about, will it be up there with the Arkham Trilogy? Batman is actually my second favorite Superhero, so I’m not rooting for one side to be better than the other. I just want that same level of quality that I know a good Spider-Man game can achieve.

Are you looking forward to the new Spider-Man game? Do you also have questions in your mind after watching the trailer? Please comment below and let me know, I would love to read your thoughts!

  1. Carnage would be a great villain but I think they’d be wise to keep that back for a future game rather than blowing a major player too early.
My concern is the cutscenes look to be filled with QTEs. I’d rather games let us enjoy a cutscene these days.
